Good ol’ Whitman! Bound by Front St & 6th Street and between Bigler St & Snyder Avenue, the area is named after the nearby Walt Whitman Bridge during its construction in the 1950s.
In 2015, Philadelphia Magazine named Whitman and other nearby South Philadelphia neighborhoods as “one of the safest and most family-friendly neighborhoods in Philadelphia”. Since that time, there has also been an influx of students and young professionals, a majority of which work at the Navy Yard.
If you enjoy a bit of greenery, stop by Whitman Square Park on 6th & Ritner Streets. If you want some good eats, visit the variety of restaurants and bars along Oregon Avenue, the famous Tony Luke’s, or call one of the many local take out / delivery spots in the area. For shopping and entertainment, head to Whitman Plaza or a bit further down to South Bowl.
